The MIT Microphotonics Center is proud to announce the award of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) on Silicon-Based Lasers and Nanonphotonics from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and sponosored by the DoD. The initial 3 year, $3.6M award supports the MIT Microphotonics Center's MURI team of 8 Leading Research universities including:

The MURI program, sponsored by the Department of Defense (DoD), sponsors large-scale, multidisciplinary research projects which represent exceptional opportunities to contribute technology applicable to nantional defense. The awards provide support for research, graduate students, and laboratory instrumentation development. MURI programs include research in 26 topic areas of basic science and engineering. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), a component of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), manages the Air Force's basic research program in support of Air Force goals of "control and maximum utilization of air and space."

The 2006 MURI program was extremely competitive; of the 121 full proposals evaluated, only 33 grants were awarded, to 27 universities. DoD's MURI grants total $15 million in FY05 and $29.2 million per year starting in FY06, for a total of $146.6 million over five years. The average award will be $900,000 per year for three years, with options of additional funding for the subsequent two years, bringing the potential total award to five years.
